Politicians usually know not to be offended when they are portrayed on an episode of Saturday Night Live, and in some cases it’s an honor to see them do a parody version of ones self.
For New York’s legally blind Governor David Paterson, it was more like offensive.
The Gov. who is usually pretty open and humorous about being blind, found Fred Armisen’s impersonation of him as more of a slap in the face to people with disabilities.
In the sketch, Armisen kept his right eye mostly closed while keeping his left eye wandering around the room. During discussion of filling Hilary Clinton’s senate seat, he held the chart upside down.
A spokesperson for Paterson had this to say,
“The governor engages in humor all the time, and he can certainly take a joke. However, this particular Saturday Night Live skit unfortunately chose to ridicule people with physical disabilities and imply that disabled people are incapable of having jobs with serious responsibilities.”
