Britain’s Tate Modern has shut down an exhibition, featuring a picture of Brooke Shields at 10 yrs old, in her birthday suit.
The 1983 work “Spiritual America” by artist Richard Price was scheduled to open Thursday, but after London police showed up claiming obscenity complaints, the entire exhibition “Pop Life, Art In A Material World,” closed.
A Scotland Yard spokesman told London’s Daily Mail:
“The officers have specialist experience in this field and are keen to work with gallery management to ensure that they do not inadvertently break the law or cause any offense to their visitors”.
The piece in question is that old trick: a photo of a photo, originally taken in 1975.
Original artist Gary Cross took the pic, showing a made up & greased up Shields staring at the camera. The Lipstick Jungle star is naked and standing in a bathtub.
And it’s freaking children advocates and religious groups out.
In defense of the final work, Artist Richard Price says:
“It’s an extremely complicated photo of a naked girl who looks like a boy made up to look like a woman.”
So it’s a picture of Brooke portraying prepubescent tranny? How on earth did this get past Brooke’s Crawford-like ex Momager Teri?
We love creative freedom in Art, but the jury’s out on this one. A pic of a pic of a naked girl as a naked boy as a naked girl?
We haven’t been this confused since Sanjaya!
The photograph “Spiritual America” appeared in 2007 in an exhibit by the same name, hosted by New York’s Guggenheim Museum.
