Mel Gibson’s comeback role ended up being more of a disaster than his personal life this weekend!
Gibson’s new film, ‘The Beaver,’ which marked his first time on the big screen since his public drama with former fling Oksana Gregorieva, took in only $109,000 at the box office this weekend. Yes thousand, not million.
Richie Fay, director of domestic releases for Summit Ent. is claiming that it wasn’t the public perception of Mel that caused the film to do so poorly, it was the film’s subject matter;
. “I don’t think this is as much a repudiation of Mel and his personal life as it is about a film with difficult subject matter. It’s not the type of role that people would gravitate to or expect him to be in.
“As it turns out, I think the film is more of an art-house speciality kind of movie than a broader commercial film. The subject matter is a hard sell even though it’s got a commercial actor in it like Mel Gibson. I don’t know whether it’s going to transcend that art-house audience.”
We’re guessing the answer is no, but did any of you see ‘The Beaver’ this weekend?
