Mythbusters recently aired a Titanic themed episode, and the shows hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman have proven that Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Jack, could have survived in the end.
While the final scene with Rose and Jack has proven to be mostly true, with Rose surviving long enough to blow the whistle and alert the passing life boat, and Jack losing the battle to hypothermia for hanging off the side of the board in the frigid waters, the guys discovered that all it would have taken to make the scrap of wood buoyant enough to support them both would have been tying Rose’s life vest to the plank.
Why the heck didn’t they think of that during a time of panic?
James Cameron himself has responded to the episode, joking; “I think you guys are missing the point here. The script says Jack died. He has to die. So maybe we screwed up and the board should have been a little tiny bit smaller, but the dude’s goin’ down.”
Remember, Titanic’s love story between two characters is fictional, while Cameron went for accuracy on the actual events that sank the ship.
