American Idol has been television’s number one show for a number of years now, and apparently that is what is keeping host Simon Cowell around (even though a little thing called a contract is doing that as well.)
Cowell recently had to fight off rumors that he’d be leaving the show after his contract was up just due to his hectic schedule of flying back and fourth from the UK to the US to film the three shows he’s a judge on, but in a recent interview, he claims that it’s ratings that would make him walk away.
“Being number one is verging on an obsession with me. I don’t like being number two. I don’t mind when you start at number 10 – people don’t always go on as number one – and you’ve got somewhere to go. But if you’re at the point you’ve reached it, of course you want to stay there.”
Idol looks to be staying at number one for this season, which is getting down to the nitty gritty, but as the numbers slip a tiny bit each year, will something new catch up eventually?
