American Idol bad boy judge, Simon Cowell, is in negotiations to remake the 1977 dance classic Saturday Night Fever. He reportedly has been in talks with the film’s owner, Robert Stigwood.
“Simon has been looking into buying the rights for years and opened discussion with Robert about the remake,” one source says. “The charm offensive has been in full swing and they made a breakthrough over the last couple of weeks. Robert was keen to get some assurances the original wouldn’t be completely butchered before he agreed to the deal.”
Cowell has drawn up a “wish-list” of stars he would like to work with on the project, including High School Musical star Zac Efron as the dancing disco king, Tony Manero, played by John Travolta in the original. Cowell also plans to bring on board superstar producer Tambaland to handle the music. The original music was written and recorded by the Bee Gees and was a tremendous hit. Tambaland will have his hands full.
